The BBQ House stands out for its innovative design that creates a continuum between the interior and exterior of the home. The house features unique windows that open up to unite the family spaces, pool area, dining space, BBQ, and garden area. The materials used in the construction of the house are capable of withstanding the harsh weather conditions of the region, ensuring durability and longevity.
The design process was not without its challenges. The geography of the location posed difficulties in planning and construction. However, these were overcome by using iron structures and different types of concrete, covered with earth-colored veneers and Oregon Pine latticework. The glass was worked to provide the necessary transparency to connect the patio with the house, maintaining a pleasant atmosphere throughout the year.
The BBQ House is not just about aesthetics; it is also about functionality. The design integrates the architecture with the landscape in a harmonious and orderly manner. The indoor living space can be transformed into an outdoor cooking and dining area by opening the large folding glass window panels, thereby incorporating nature into the interior. Even when closed, the lack of walls allows the mountain light to flow through the space.
The project was realized after meticulous analysis of existing climate data and topographic plans of the place. The design was developed using SketchUp, Rhino, and Autocad, with the analysis of general lighting being carried out through the Lamp program. The main challenge was to transform the different levels of the Andes mountain terrain into a semi-plane land, using the natural conditions of the land, without the intervention of large retaining walls.
The BBQ House is a testament to Karla Aliaga Mac Dermitt's architectural prowess and innovative thinking. It is a space that allows cooking outdoors and reuniting the family, while also integrating the house with the garden. The design unites nature, pool, dining, and cooking spaces in a unique and harmonious manner, making it a deserving winner of the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award.
